Circle of Fifths Key Signature Clock
for the Music Room, Studio, Rehearsal Space
Circle of 5ths/4ths Music Theory Teaching Aid
Built into a Wall Clock!
This clock is my own design.
I have these clocks on the walls of my teaching studios
and my students have them on the walls of their own practice rooms.
It's a CLOCK
It's a music theory TEACHING AID!
In case you're not familiar with the Circle of Fifths,
it's an elegantly simple method to learn/memorize musical
keys, degrees of the scale, relative Majors/minors, sharps/flats etc.
You can use the circle to quickly tell -
What key you're playing in, based on the
number of sharps or flats in the key signature.
What notes are sharped or flatted,
based on the key you're playing in.
What chords belong to the key you're playing in.
For example, find the chord you're currently playing on the
outer ring of the circle. One chord CLOCKWISE is the V chord.
One chord CounterCLOCKWISE is the IV chord.
What Major and minor keys share the same key signature.
For example, find the key of G Major on the outer ring.
Look at the same clock position on the inner ring and you learn
that E minor shares the same key signature. Look at the 2nd ring
in the same clock position and you learn that the key signature is ONE sharp.
There's a ton of information available from the circle of 5ths and it's useable
by musicians of ALL skill and experience levels from brand new beginners to
very experienced professionals. I've played professionally for over 40 years and I
STILL refer to the circle of 5ths often.
This teaching aid is also a standard WALL CLOCK. Instead of numbers to indicate
the hours and minutes, it has letters indicating keys. 12 O'clock is still straight up,
like on any clock. 3,6,9 etc are all in the expected places on the clock. There simply
aren't any numbers. It's like a watch or clock with no numbers, like a lot of the clocks
you see every day.
The clock is ten inches in diameter.
It comes with the typical slotted hanger thingie on the back.
You stick a nail, screw or adhesive picture hanger thing in your wall
and hang the clock on that. It uses one AA size battery. The battery is
included. The clock above my desk right now has the original AA battery in it
and it's been running for over 2 years.
I consider a circle of fifths an essential piece of equipment in any teaching
studio or practice room for ANY musician, regardless of instrument. Piano, guitar,
wind instruments, vocalists, choirs, hip-hop bag pipers, flamenco hub cap bangers
can all benefit from having the circle of fifths handy. And since this version is a clock
you'll know when it's time to stop practicing and go feed the dog!
